Is a 2027 wedding calling your name?? Love that for you.
But first: the proposal.
If you’re trying to figure out where to propose in Chicago without making it feel awkward, overly staged, or like something you copied from a Pinterest board at 1 a.m., you’re in the right place. As a Chicago engagement photographer, I’ve helped photograph proposals that were romantic, chaotic in the best way, super private, wildly emotional, and everything in between.
This guide is full of proposal ideas, Chicago proposal locations, surprise proposal tips, and little photographer-brain things to think about so the moment feels personal, intentional, and very, very you.

When you’re planning your proposal, the BEST thing you can do is nail down a vibe first. Do you want it sweet and romantic? A little funky and nontraditional? Super casual and laidback?
Whatever feels like you guys, I’ve got proposal ideas for you, babes!!
A romantic proposal (a little cinematic, a little dramatic, and very much “oh my gosh this is happening”) is for the couple who wants that big movie moment. Traditional proposals are a classic for a reason: they’re super sweet and super special every damn time. If this sounds like the energy you’re going for… Here are my best proposal ideas for you:
Any sort of park or riverwalk with a view of water makes a perfect backdrop, and bonus points if you have a little setup there. Some romantic music playing, a bottle of champagne waiting, and of course, you spilling your heart out when you pop the question! It works (and, yeah, brings me to tears) every time.
Anytime that I hear a proposal is on an anniversary… It gets me. Because of that level of intention? That’s what it’s all about, and that’s what makes things romantic!!
There’s something about the big city behind you guys in your world alone that I cannot handleee. The juxtaposition between all the noise behind you, just having your moment?? Yeah. Beautiful. Rom-com level goodness.

If you guys aren’t into all the big fuss and you just want something super quiet and just for the two of you, I’m obsessed with what your proposal will look like already. Here are my top proposal ideas for this energy!!
It doesn’t have to be a big moment if that’s not you guys. Maybe you’re both a little shy, or maybe you just don’t want to worry about the fuss of other people being around, and I totally get it. Being at home can be one of the sweetest proposal ideas! Light some candles, play some of your songs, and pop the question. If it feels like you, it’s absolutely perfect, loves.
A walk in a park or just around your neighborhood can make for one of the most casual + most romantic proposals. You’re completely alone, with just all your love filling up the space. And yes, I’m crying just thinking about it.
Maybe you guys are board game lovers or spend your weekends at wineries. Popping the question while you’re at a perfectly normal thing for the two of you not only is adorable but also makes it a COMPLETE surprise.

Okay, if you want something a little different and a little funky… You’re my kinda people. This is probably for the couple who spends their time thrifting, dancing around their living room to Fleetwood Mac, maybe even going to the vintage theater every weekend. If that sounds like the kinda couple you are, here are the proposal ideas perfect for you:
A fun location automatically makes for a unique proposal. Bowling alleys? Love. Art museums? Incredible. I have a few of my favorite Chicago proposal locations as a Chicago engagement photographer listed later on, but know that I love any sort of place that feels different.
Themed proposals are tragically underrated. A retro proposal, a monochrome proposal?? Your options are seriously unlimited, and you can get as creative as your little heart desires with them. Know, though, that I love a good theme, so I’m always here to help curate a vibe as your Chicago engagement photographer.
This is a proposal idea I always love, because what do you mean you planned a whole proposal, then coordinated to get everyone you guys love together to celebrate it?? Gagged, every time. Whether it’s at a restaurant down the street or you rent out a venue, I’m fully obsessed with this idea.

If you two are all about music and spend most of your time together dancing, bring that into your proposal. Because, I mean, what’s better than it feeling completely like you?
It could take some coordination, but if you guys have a certain record store that you go to… That would be adorable. Picture me, casually looking through the racks like I’m not even there, then capturing the sweetest moment. Love!!
Creating a custom vinyl? Stop, I’m obsessed. Incorporating songs that are special to the two of you is the cutest damn thing, so this is one of my favorite ideas I’ve ever seen.

If you fall into the category of a “Chicago foodie,” you already know that the city has some fantastic restaurants. A restaurant proposal is a tried-and-true classic, so you can’t go wrong here.
I mention a few Chicago restaurant proposal locations below, but it’s even more special if you hit your favorite restaurant. Whether it’s a small burger joint in your neighborhood or a super-fancy meal… It’ll be adorable.
If a big restaurant proposal isn’t your style, plan a cooking night together at home with some good wine or champagne, and get down on one knee there!

As a Chicago engagement photographer, I have a loooong list of proposal locations here in the city. Here are a few of my top favorites, though:
And if you’re looking for engagement photo locations for after… I’ve got you covered with this blog post.

If a restaurant is more your style, you cannot miss these Chicago spots:

If you’re sitting here wondering how you’re gonna pop the question as a complete surprise… I’ve got you covered. Because… I get it, that’s a valid concern! Here are my top tips as a Chicago engagement photographer:
If your lover knows that a proposal is coming, plan a few different things to throw them off the scent! When you plan the first date or two, they’ll probs walk into it thinking, “Oh yeah, I’m definitely getting engaged today,” and then when it’s not either of those times, it’ll be a shocker, trust me.

You can reference my full guide on the best season for engagement photos in Chicago, but my top tip? Go with the season that feels the most like you!! Whether it’s a cozy indoor winter proposal or a fall proposal that feels like you’re the main character in a coming-of-age movie, I’m so here for it.

A speech is a proposal MUST. This is the perfect time for you to spill your soul to your favorite person and say how you feel! Bonus points if you write it down on a piece of paper that you can keep forever.

Whether you’re asking friends or family, buying a “just because” ring to test it, or you use the sleep method (measuring their finger overnight), make sure you trying to get the ring size doesn’t give your plan away.

If you’re proposing outside, always be sure to have a plan B. Chicago weather can definitely get a little silly, so have an indoor option just in case!

Okay, you’re probably actually terrified of ruining the surprise. And I get it. Because those 100% shocked, fully candid reactions?? They’re everything. Here are a few rapid-fire tips to not ruin it:

Do I need a permit for proposal photos in Chicago?
Permitting will totally depend on where you’re popping the question, but that’s something I’m always here to help with when I’m on your team.
How far in advance should I book a Chicago proposal photographer?
Ideally, having about 1-2 months to plan with your proposal photographer is key.
What time of day is best for a Chicago proposal?
Sunset proposals have my whole heart, and the photos we get?? I love.

What happens if it rains during my proposal?
Typically, your options are either to move to an indoor location or just embrace the rain (which can be so damn romantic).
Can you help me plan the proposal location and timing?
For sure. As a Chicago engagement photographer, I know how to work locations, move around crowds, and get the best lighting, so that’s the level of expertise I’m always gonna bring to your day.
Should we take engagement photos right after the proposal?
This is fully up to the couple. I usually get a few freshly-engaged pics, then do a whole separate engagement photoshoot after. We’ll definitely talk about your preference!!

What happens after the proposal?
Afterwards, you can either choose to plan a celebration with your fave people, go out for drinks just the two of you, or head home and get cozy. My top tip? Always have something planned; it makes it that much more romantic.
What are the signs that I’m ready to propose?
If you’re so excited about starting your forever with your favorite person and you’re ready to wake up next to them every morning… Yeah. It’s time.

In my opinion, the best proposals are captured and frozen in time forever and ever. If you’re planning your proposal, I’d love to be there for it! You can inquire right here about booking me and helping you plan the perfect engagement.
