Let me just start by saying this: Chicago? It’s cool AF. And if you’re getting married here, you’re in luck, because Chicago weddings hit different.
As a Chicago wedding photographer, I know how incredibly good Chicago weddings can be, but I also know they start with a good plan. Because when you consider all the things you maybe didn’t even think about before (the weather, the traffic, how you’re going to achieve the maximum level of funk in your decor)… That’s when you end up with a day that flows. And that’s what I always want for you, babes!!
So, if you’re planning your 2027 Chicago wedding, you won’t want to miss my guide that has all the logistics you need to know without giving up your groovy, nontraditional little soul.

I’m all about making things as easy and low-stress as possible, so here’s my quick starter kit for planning a Chicago wedding. Each major section has a hyperlink so that you can just skip to wherever you are in your wedding planning timeline.

Chicago is, like, the best city for weddings. Maybe I’m biased since I am a wedding photographer in Chicago, but I just think it’s really, really rad here.
It has something for every kind of couple: the classy, elegant vibe, the trendy, editorial vibe, and my favorite of all, the funky, nontraditional vibe. And if you fall into the category of the last one… Yeah. We’re gonna get along just fine.
If you’re dreaming of a wedding location that has city views, waterfront photo ops, and a little bit of nostalgic grunge, Chicago is gonna be perfect for you!!

First comes your venue hunt, and I’m not gonna lie, you’re SO in luck. Chicago wedding venues are kind of my Super Bowl because there are so many incredible ones that just feel like editorial playgrounds to my little photographer brain. You can see ten of my faves right here, but I’ll also give you an overview of a few more that you really can’t miss:

Honestly, the hardest part is over once you’ve picked a venue, because deciding between these is actually an impossible task. The next step is choosing your wedding date, and you really can’t go wrong here!
Here’s my breakdown of Chicago weddings in every season, so you can see which one fits you the best:
For blooming flowers and a romantic feel, go for spring. Spring weddings in Chicago look like dancing to your favorite 70s songs on an outdoor dance floor underneath hanging flowers (probably in pastel colors).
If the venue you chose has gardens or outdoor reception spaces, I’ll pretty much always recommend spring.

If you want epic golden hour photos and to end your night at, like, 11:00 pm dancing to Beyoncé… A summer wedding might be your perfect fit.
Summer weddings in Chicago fit really well at venues that have open-air spaces or indoor and outdoor options, and bonus points if you can decorate with bold colors!! I picture somewhere like The Ivy Room for your mid-summer night weddings.

Okay… Fall weddings in Chicago? They have my heart. Chicago brings such a grungey feel, and it fits with moody autumn color palettes SO well. There’s something about the pairing that just scratches my brain!
I can so easily picture a fall wedding at Beatnik that’s full of editorial energy and city street photo spots, and it’s something I need in my life immediately. It’s giving Dreams by The Cranberries.

I have to say: winter weddings are totally underrated. Cozy vibes and candlelight decor?? Sign me up, every time.
Winter weddings work well at fully indoor venues since it does get cold here, but that can’t stop us!! If you’re in a space like Celeste or something similar, it just works.

Spoiler alert: wedding vendors in Chicago? Incredible.
As your Chicago wedding photographer, I’ll always help you pick the best vendor team specific to your wedding, but know that these are the ones you’ll need to hire for a day that feels super smooth and actually lets you stay present:

Just another reason to love Chicago weddings is that the city actually makes wedding planning easy. Pretty much all you have to do is get your marriage license, which is just filling out an online application, then going to the courthouse to get a paper, then say “I do” between one day and 60 days of getting it.
Different locations will have different rules on (boring, but important) things like permits and insurance, so always be sure to check with your venue if you’ll need any of that!

Need a quick-reference guide on what TF you’re supposed to be doing, building up to your wedding? This checklist will help to make sure wedding planning looks more like date nights with bae and less like ripping your hair out over a spreadsheet:
– Set a budget
– Pick your wedding style
– Book your vendors
– Ask your fave people to stand beside you
– Make your guest list

Then all you have to do is say “I do” and throw the party of your life.

When it comes to your day-of timeline, here’s my top tip: prioritize your peace. I have a whole guide about things couples regret from their wedding day, and most of them can be solved by creating a timeline that actually works for you to stay present in every damn adorable moment.
Here’s a quick sample that works for a traditional wedding setup, but of course has some wiggle room if your wedding looks a little different.
9:00 am: Start getting ready
1:30 pm: First look & private vows
2:00 pm: Couples’ and wedding party portraits
3:00 pm: Take a breather before the ceremony
4:00 pm: Tie the knot!!
4:30 pm: Family pictures, then enter cocktail hour
5:30 pm: Make your grand entrance into your reception
6:00 pm: Dinner & toasts
7:15 pm: Dance the night away, babes!!

How much does a Chicago wedding cost?
Chicago weddings range quite a bit in price, and it’s totally dependent on how you plan your wedding! Smaller weddings definitely save a bit of money, as do off-season weddings.
When should I book vendors for a 2027 wedding?
Honestly, booking vendors as soon as possible is always the move, especially if you have specific soulmate vendors that you already know you definitely want to hire for your day.

What if my engagement is shorter than 12 months?
The best practice for a shorter engagement is to follow the checklist above by starting at the month that you’re in, and just doing everything before that in that first month! I know it seems stressful, but know that I’m here to help you as your Chicago wedding photographer, like… Always.
How do I pick the best Chicago wedding venue?
I know that it can be tricky to choose a venue for your Chicago wedding since they’re all so damn good, but all you have to do is pick the one that feels most like you. If your dream wedding is a full-on dance party, somewhere like Celeste will be the one. If you’re picturing something more casual and laidback, it might be more like Beatnik.

If you’re planning your Chicago wedding for 2027, I’m honestly jealous of you. You’re in the best era of weddings, and it’s so easy to create one that feels completely like you.
Your nontraditional, super cool wedding day deserves a photographer who captures it like that, and if you’re on the hunt for one… Hey! You can learn more about me here and inquire about booking me here. I can’t wait to meet you, babes!!
