Let me just start by saying that “minimal” doesn’t always mean beige, empty, boring, or personality-free. It can mean fewer details that are higher quality and fewer moments that are more meaningful instead of more decor, more events, and more stuff. And if I’m being totally honest… As a Chicago wedding photographer, I’m obsessed. Not because I think every wedding needs to be tiny, neutral, or stripped back, but because a minimalist wedding can make room for the things that feel the most like you.
If you’re planning your 2027 wedding and a day like this is calling your name, I love that for you!! See why minimalist weddings are alllll over 2027 wedding trends, and learn how to plan a day JUST like this.

A minimalist wedding isn’t just a white room with three bud vases and one serif font for every sign you have. It can be colorful, retro, editorial, emotional, and completely full of your personality, and still be minimalist. The “minimal” part is about keeping the pieces that mean something and releasing the ones you only added because weddings are apparently supposed to have seventeen separate events now.

Couples today are more focused on feeling than ever, and in case you forgot, that’s exactly how a wedding is supposed to be. Somewhere in the mess of social media, people forgot that your wedding is something that’s done to celebrate your love, not a performance.
Seeing true, real meaning be at the forefront of your day again?? I’m obsessed with it. And it’s making minimalist weddings a 2027 wedding trend prediction that makes sooo much sense.

Listen. I love all things funky, bold, nontraditional, and maximalist. It’s just who I am at my core!!
When it comes to weddings, though, know that minimalism doesn’t have to mean boring. We’re not talking about just a black and white color palette or just a little bit of decor. We’re talking about throwing out all the fluff that doesn’t feel true to your soul, and just keeping the things that make you say, “Yeah, this is SO us.”
A minimal wedding doesn’t have to mean making it barely decorated and totally void of personality. Instead, it could look like less structure in your timeline, fewer events that you have to do, or even fewer people on your guest list. The world is your oyster, babes!!
Here are a few ideas to make your wedding minimal, but still full of life:

If you’re obsessed already, same. Let’s get into the fun part: how to plan a wedding that feels like this: easy, laidback, and totally you.
My #1 tip? Create a well-thought-out timeline.
Your wedding timeline sets the tone for the whole damn day. It’s basically your guiding light, because it determines when you eat (important, trust me), how much alone time you get with your lover, and overall, just how good you feel.
Relaxed timelines usually happen because someone looked at the schedule and lovingly removed three unnecessary location changes, a tradition nobody wanted, and the thirty-minute gap where everyone was apparently supposed to teleport across Chicago.

As a Chicago wedding photographer, I’m soooo over inviting people just because you feel like you have to. An intentionally small guest list will let you stay WAY more present in your day. Because, if you’re here, your vibe is probably more “I can’t wait to dance to Beyoncé with my favorite people” than “I can’t wait to make small talk with people I haven’t seen in three years all night long.”
I know cutting the guest list is not always as easy as crossing Aunt Carol off a spreadsheet and calling it a day. Family expectations are real, budgets are real… But it is worth asking whether each person is being invited because you genuinely want them there or because you feel like you’re supposed to have them there.

As I said before, minimal wedding decor does not mean boring. You can have the funkiest, boldest wedding decor of all time, but still keep it to where you’re not just throwing things around because you feel like you have to.
You can wear hot pink heels, book the bowling alley, bring in a tattoo artist, and still have a minimalist wedding. The goal is not to remove your personality. It’s to stop piling on details that have nothing to do with it.
Minimalist weddings mean that you’re having just what you want, and nothing else. You’re not including details for anyone else; you’re creating the kinda day that’s what the inside of your quirky little brain feels like.
Some of my favorite ideas for decor that’s fun and unique, but still simple, are:

Your wedding venue sets the whole atmosphere, so choosing a space that lets a day like this flow really naturally is one of the most important things you can do!!
Here are a few of my FAVORITE Chicago wedding venues that would work so well for a minimalist wedding:

If the concept of having a minimalist wedding that’s still fun, quirky, and bold is throwing you off, here are some questions that my couples ask that might just help you:
Is a Minimalist Wedding the Same as a Micro Wedding?
Minimalist weddings and micro weddings are different, though one wedding can be both. Micro weddings are all about the guest count, and keeping your guest list under 30. Minimalist weddings are categorized by an approach to design and planning that just keeps things a little simpler.

Can a Minimalist Wedding Still Have Bold Colors?
A resounding yes here.
If I’m honest, my favorite minimalist weddings that I’ve seen as a Chicago wedding photographer all have fun colors.

Is a Minimalist Wedding Cheaper?
The cost will totally depend on what you prioritize. Some minimalist weddings can end up costing less overall, but choosing fewer high-quality elements doesn’t always mean a lower overall budget.

What Should You Prioritize in a Minimalist Wedding Budget?
In my opinion, I would prioritize:
When planning a minimalist wedding.

How Do You Keep a Minimalist Wedding From Feeling Empty?
Minimalist weddings never really feel empty because they’re so focused on connection, but if it’s something you’re worried about, you could always focus on unique table arrangements, texture, good music, and choosing the perfect venue.

What Traditions Can You Skip in a Minimalist Wedding?
The good news is that you can skip whatever you want, because it’s your wedding, babes!! If any of these are traditions that don’t feel 100%, completely like you, toss ‘em:

For a minimalist wedding, you don’t need to fill every minute, invite every person, or choose every tradition to have a wedding that feels complete. You need the pieces that feel like the two of you, and a plan that lets you experience them.
If you want a Chicago wedding photographer who can document the weird little in-between moments and help you create editorial portraits that feel like a whole album cover? I’m right here, babes!!
